Ready to take your songwriting further? This course is for songwriters who’ve completed the Introduction to Songwriting Theory (Level 1) course, or who feel confident with major and minor scales, diatonic harmony and basic chord progressions.
Building on melody, harmony and song structure, you’ll explore the techniques and patterns that help shape a wide range of contemporary and classic songs.
Through guided exercises, listening examples and creative workshops, you’ll learn about:
- Expanding your harmonic vocabulary through borrowed chords, inversions and secondary dominants
- Creating and using the circle of fifths
- Analysing songwriting techniques used by influential artists
- Developing melodies and writing motifs
Over five weeks, you’ll explore new concepts, ask questions and develop your songwriting with guidance from experienced musician Grace Alexander.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of how songwriters create contrast, momentum and emotional depth – and how you can use these ideas in your own music.
Your songwriting journey doesn’t have to stop when this course ends. Our new weekly Songwriting Social is a space to keep writing, experimenting and connecting with other songwriters in a relaxed, creative space. – find out more here.
This class is for adults over 18.
