What's happening in the music?
Action is the name of the day in Schumann’s Piano Concerto, which gets straight down to some big romantic tunes from the off, before powering through to a satisfyingly powerful ending. Finishing the evening is his Symphony No. 2 – a “triumph of the will”, a musical depiction of someone struggling against the odds and pulling themselves through some very tough times.
