Romantic. Exotic. Music with the wow factor.
Who’s on stage
We welcome one of the big beasts of the UK’s classical scene, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with their Music Director Vasily Petrenko and star pianist Bertrand Chamayou.
What they’re playing
We’ve got three huge headliners in one concert. This is big music to make your Friday night go off with a bang. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture positively drips with romance and drama, Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto is action from start to finish and Stravinsky’s Firebird redefines musical intensity.

What's happening in the music?
There’s too much going on here to give all three composers justice, so lets focus on the Stravinsky. The opening is brooding and faintly ominous – think Gollum’s eyes peering out of the darkness. Next up we meet the Firebird – a total contrast – bright musical colours, as close as fire can be depicted in music. Later The Infernal Dance ratchets things up into 6th gear; intense, harrowing and violent. The ending is, no other way to describe it, edge of seat.
