What's happening in the music?
Maurice Ravel was a true one-off whose music is always instantly recognisable. He combined tradition with the contemporary and was fascinated by and incorporated other musical styles and traditions such as Javanese Gamelan, Roma music, Jazz and Spanish music. To all of this he added a sprinkling of humour and his amazing skills for using the orchestra to paint a rich musical picture. Your concert here is a snapshot of his music, from the tender Pavane and his spell-binding Piano Concerto, showing the huge influence of Jazz on his music, to the radiant and enchanting music for the ballet Mother Goose (Ma Mère L’Oye).
