Experimental. Dramatic. Stories of love and life.
Who’s on stage
The Czech Republic has a long tradition of chamber music, and the Martinů Quartet sits right at the heart of it. Now in their 50th year, they’ve built a reputation for playing with depth, precision and real feeling.
What they’re playing
Full of energy and invention, Martinů’s Second Quartet helped establish his name across the world. Janáček’s ‘Kreutzer Sonata’ is driven by obsession and jealousy, inspired by Tolstoy’s story of a turbulent relationship. It’s gripping from start to finish.
And Smetana’s ‘From My Life’ is exactly that – a personal, autobiographical work. Love, joy, and, in its closing moments, the shadow of his hearing loss.
