What's happening in the music?

For his ninth and final symphony, Beethoven did something brand new, and just a bit bonkers. He added a huge choir and four vocal soloists to the orchestra for the closing movement. He gave them a message of human unity (the Ode to Joy) to sing and paired it with one of the most catchy tunes ever written. Universal popularity ensued. To this day, it’s one of the most popular pieces of music ever written.

To open the night, composer Kristine Tjøgersen is creating a brand new piece to pair with the Beethoven. It’s not been written yet so we can’t tell you what it’s like, but her music is full of imagination and humour, so it’s definitely going to be one to remember.

Make the most of it
