Everything music can do. Under one iconic roof.

Designed and built for live music in 2004. Home to spine-tingling, mind-blowing, life-affirming experiences ever since.

Join us for the next era as we celebrate twenty years of music. And one big future.

Our first 20 years

In 2004, one of the best places for music anywhere was built in the North East of England. Two decades on, it would take 14 million minutes to experience all the performances that have happened at The Glasshouse. Young people and adults have joined a music class 2.7 million times. We’ve supported the development of thousands of artists. Our resident orchestra Royal Northern Sinfonia has toured the region, and the world.

Over the next year, we’re going to celebrate all the great things our charity has achieved in the last two decades.

Digging in the archive to learn more about our incredible building – and how we’ll secure it for the next decade. Scrolling through the camera roll to uncover some of our favourite memories and moments, and the people who help make it all happen. And looking ahead at what’s to come from our third decade.

Ready for our third decade

We want The Glasshouse to provide a world-class home for music for the next generation. For our third decade, it’s all about unlocking our creative potential to create a music-filled future for the North East.

You’ll see more about how we’ll do this in the coming months – but for now, the headlines:

1. Establish a new Music Academy for young people – opening the doors to a life full of music right from the start.
2. Be the most affordable music centre in Europe – making sure money is never a barrier to music.
3. Enter our most creatively ambitious era yet – enabling world-class artists and homegrown musicians to make and perform their best work.

Looking ahead: celebrating a milestone year
As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, we’ll share the full story of our impact with a major impact report, and will mark our birthday with new national branding to show the best of what The Glasshouse has to offer. Throughout the year, we’ll spotlight headline projects and performances that showcase the transformative power of music, creativity, and community – starting with Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time, an epic performance with singers and musicians from across the North East.

Supporting music in the North East
Turning twenty is a pivotal moment. To sustain this vision for the next 20 years, we’re building momentum for a public fundraising campaign that will launch in 2025. This support will help ensure that The Glasshouse continues to be a vibrant place for artists and audiences for decades to come.

Music for a new decade

Throughout the year, you’ll see us sharing different campaigns about things that are important to us as a charity – and how you can help support us and the future of music in the North East.
