Twenty years of music. One big future

Building our musical future together
Since opening in 2004, The Glasshouse has become a driving force for cultural and economic growth in the North East, inspiring millions through live music, education and community programmes.
20 years ago, the collective vision of community leaders, architects, musicians, acoustic engineers, entrepreneurs, and music lovers created one of the best places to experience music anywhere. Their commitment and vision built not just a music centre, but a place which resonates with the values and spirit of the North East.
Built with what was then the UK’s largest National Lottery grant outside London, and driven by the ambition of Gateshead Council, The Glasshouse opened with one clear mission: to make music accessible to everyone – no matter your background or income. We’re a charity, and the support of generous donors and funders helps us bring that mission to life every day.
To mark our 20th anniversary year, and to kick start our ambitious third decade, we worked with leading planning and economics consultancy Lichfields, to create a social and economic impact report for our charity.
The report will be officially launched at UKREiiF, the UK’s leading real estate and infrastructure investment forum, in Leeds on Wednesday 21 May.

“This report is a window on just how extraordinary our musical community is. Together, we’ve just entered our third decade, and like many 20-year-olds we’re restless with ambition.”

Let’s champion live music together
As a charity we’re focused on making sure all of that is available to anyone – no matter where you’re from, how old you are, how much money you have, or what challenges you face.
And that’s where your support comes in. Because you make The Glasshouse a place where music lives and grows.
