The Unthanks at 20: An anniversary special with Royal Northern Sinfonia

Symphonic. Spectacular. A celebration of two decades.
The Unthanks unite with Royal Northern Sinfonia to celebrate 20 years as a band in spectacular style. Simultaneously marking the 10th anniversary of The Unthanks winning BBC Folk Album of the Year, with Mount The Air, the show features cherry-picked crowd favourites from across their 15 albums to-date.
The orchestral sensibilities and symphonic explorations already present in the music of The Unthanks will be further elevated through their collaboration with NewcastleGateshead’s world class chamber orchestra. Led by the arrangements and compositions of Unthanks pianist and composer, Adrian McNally, they’ve retained close care of the songs they love and they haven’t missed the opportunity for artistic development during the orchestration process.
The show will be conducted by Ellie Slorach.

More about the show
If folk music is traditionally perceived as ‘low culture’, The Unthanks aspire to prove that the beauty, truth and relevance present in the oral history of the people, is anything but common.
They’ve already demonstrated this through collaborations with BBC Concert Orchestra at The Proms, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band and Charles Hazlewood’s Army Of Generals. Therefore, this celebratory show with Royal Northern Sinfonia is a natural next step and a fitting way to celebrate two decades of innovation that have earned them admirers including Michael Sheen, Maxine Peake, Martin Freeman, Elvis Costello, Martin Hayes, Mackenzie Crook, Dawn French, and Phillip Selway.
