What's happening in the music?
Scoring films isn’t easy. But somehow John Williams makes it look effortless. He’s a master of creating music for every mood, signature tunes for every character, sound worlds for places real and imaginary.
At a time when glossy, orchestral soundtracks were falling out of favour in Hollywood, he bucked the trend with big fanfares and sweeping Romantic melodies. You can really hear the influence of classical composers like Wagner, Holst and Korngold.
Record breaker
The soundtrack for the first Star Wars (1977) is the bestselling symphonic album of all time. Williams holds the record for the most Oscar nominations of any living person, as well as the only person to have been nominated in 7 different decades (1960s – 2020s) and the oldest person ever nominated (at the age of 90). Just imagine what his award shelf must look like.
