“…pure, organic folk loveliness of the highest calibre” – Red Guitar Music
Spell Songs is The musical companion piece to The Lost Words and The Lost Spells by renowned nature author Robert Macfarlane and award-winning artist Jackie Morris, featuring the multifaceted talents and collaborative genius of the Spell Songs ensemble: Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter & Jim Molyneux.
The Lost Words: Spell Songs enthralled audiences at sold out gigs across the UK in 2019, receiving standing ovations at iconic venues such as Hay Festival’s Main Stage and London’s Southbank Centre
“One of the best live experiences I’ve ever seen at Birmingham Town Hall” –Chris Proctor, Head of Programming, Birmingham Town Hall and Symphony Hall
“… one of the most sublime evenings you will ever enjoy. The magic of these superstars onstage – the art, the music, the sheer, ravishing beauty of the language… one of the greatest concerts we’ve ever had at Hay” – Hay International Literary Festival
This long awaited live performance at Sage will feature music from both Spell Songs (2019) and the much anticipated and recently released Spell Songs II: Let The Light In (2021), which gave voice to yet more of the flora and fauna featured in the acclaimed ‘Lost’ books.
“…proves equally captivating (as their first album) with a serendipitous blend of guitar, harp, woodwind, kora and more.…but it’s the group’s collective vocals that ace it.” – Neil Spencer, The Observer *****
“The album is a testament to the interplay between the musicians” – David Honigman, Financial Times ****
“A glorious blend of music and pictures celebrating British wildlife with all kinds of fantastic folk players involved.” – Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2 Folk Show
Intrinsic to the magic of a Spell Songs performance is the presence of Jackie Morris painting live on stage with ‘her band’! As part of the performance foxes and otters will be conjured live on stage using sumi ink, river water and watercolours.
