The Hide
An installation by Hayden Thorpe
The Hide is brand new artwork created by Hayden Thorpe during his time as The Glasshouse Artist In Residence.
Featuring music written by Hayden and recorded with Royal Northern Sinfonia, The Hide is designed to be a peaceful space to relax and reflect.
Hayden Thorpe made his name as the distinctive voice and chief songwriter of acclaimed indie band Wild Beasts. After five albums for Domino Records (including the Mercury nominated Two Dancers and two further UK Top 10 albums (Present Tense, Boy King), Thorpe has released two solo albums that combine a magpie range of influences with his unique vocal style and seductive, confessional songwriting.
From Wild Beasts to wildlife, following a return to his native Cumbria, Hayden’s latest work is influenced by the natural world around him.
Inspired directly by a bird hide Hayden has spent time in near wetlands near Kendal, this brand new Hide will sit on the concourse of The Glasshouse, overlooking the River Tyne and the kittiwakes who call the area home.
Hayden hopes The Hide will be a place of sanctuary; somewhere to connect with the natural world, escape daily demands and experience ‘a sensation of ease’ in a dedicated space.

An Evening with Hayden Thorpe and the Tyne Kittiwakes
Where there is nature, there is music.
Join Wild Intrigue and Hayden Thorpe for an evening exploration of wildness in the city.
The Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside is the perfect location for The Hide installation to inspire moments of wildness. For 60 years, before The Glasshouse stood on the banks of the Tyne, the famous Tyne Kittiwakes have brought their wild oceanic calls to the heart of the Quayside. These delicate gulls are truly pelagic in nature, entwined with the ocean, they spend their winters out on the open sea – rarely touching land.
Join Hayden Thorpe and Wild Intrigue at The Glasshouse for an evening of music and wildlife exploration. This one-off experience will begin with an introduction to The Hide and a special acoustic performance by Hayden, followed by a Tyne Kittiwake safari. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit and enjoy The Hide before and after the experience.
Wild Intrigue is a social enterprise based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, creating experiences and projects to celebrate the wildlife, people and landscapes of Northern England. Tickets for this one-off tour are available from the Wild Intrigue website at An Evening with Hayden Thorpe and the Tyne Kittiwakes – Wild Intrigue
