About the bands

The Blow Monkeys

The Blow Monkeys epitomized mid-80s pop glamour with hits like “Digging Your Scene” and “It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way.”

Led by charismatic frontman Dr. Robert (Robert Howard), the band blended sophisticated pop with soul, jazz, and dance music while maintaining a socially conscious edge, openly criticizing Conservative policies. Their musical journey evolved from “jazz punk” to soulful dance tracks, including collaborations with Curtis Mayfield and contributions to the multi-million-selling “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack.

After disbanding in 1990, they reformed in 2008 and have since released nine albums, including their latest “Birdsong” (2025) on Alan McGee’s Creation Youth label.

The Christians

The Christians

This Liverpool band burst onto the late 80s music scene with their “socially aware soul,” characterized by infectious melodies and warm harmonies.

Named after the three original Christian brothers (Garry, Russell, and Roger), their triple-platinum 1987 debut album featured hits like “Forgotten Town” and “Ideal World.” They reached #1 with their second album “Colour” (1990) and contributed to charity singles including “Ferry Cross The Mersey” following the Hillsborough disaster.

Led by vocalist Garry Christian, the band continues to tour extensively, with Chris Evans describing their performance as “the best gig I’ve ever been to.”
