Historic. Hypnotic. Always evolving.

Who’s on stage

RNS Moves – our one-of-a-kind ensemble bringing together professional disabled musicians and members of Royal Northern Sinfonia – join forces with Candoco Dance Company, the trailblazing company that keeps expanding what dance can be. Together, they’re breaking boundaries and smashing stereotypes every time they step into the spotlight.

What they’re playing

Music that traces a path through three centuries of musical experimentation and evolution, from Johann Sebastian Bach to Arvo Pärt to Caroline Shaw. Fresh, bold, contemporary dance responds to and grows with the music.

What's happening in the music?

From tiny seeds, giant trees grow. From a single note, magnificent songs, sonatas and symphonies are built. This concert traces a path through centuries of musical evolution to show how the simplest musical idea can be endlessly transformed into something new. We begin with three pieces from J.S. Bach where one melodic phrase grows into a spectacular display of technical precision and heartfelt emotion in equal measure. From there, Caroline Shaw’s Ritornello 2.sq.2.j.a reimagines the Baroque through loops and fragments that twist and glimmer, while Carl Bergstrøm-Nielsen’s Towards an unbearable lightness strips sound back to its barest, most unpredictable form. Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel offers a moment of calm reflection before Terry Riley’s In C bursts forward in a pulsing wave of rhythm and reinvention, each player moving at their own pace and making their own musical decisions but coming together as one.
