Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence

Who’s on stage
Get ready for an evening packed with rich emotions and vivid contrasts as as members of Royal Northern Sinfonia perform bold, theatrical chamber music by three of Russia’s greatest composers.
What they’re playing
First up is Prokofiev’s quintet, written for a travelling ballet troupe. Expect a colourful circus of clashing harmonies, unusual instrument combinations, and unexpected rhythms. Next, Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8. A haunting, deeply personal piece written in just three days on a visit to Germany in 1960, its mournful tones reflect the shadow of wartime Dresden. To finish, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence – a sun-drenched string sextet bursting with passion and warmth, mixing Italian inspiration with rich Russian tune-smithing.
From lively openers to soaring finales, this is chamber music full of soul, sparkle, and plenty of heart, all performed by the North East’s very own orchestra.
