Join Michael Lamb’s Strictly Smokin’ Big Band for an unforgettable evening featuring the exceptional flautist, composer and bandleader Gareth Lockrane. Lockrane, known as an instrumentalist, arranger and educator across London’s leading conservatoires brings a multi-generational vision to big band music. He blends intricate compositional detail with the spontaneous freedom of improvisation.
Lockrane’s approach combines influences from Eddie Harris and Wayne Shorter to Quincy Jones and Louis Cole. His new album Box of Tricks, recorded with his own all-star Big Band, showcases his gift for writing ambitious arrangements with rich harmonic textures with compelling solo voices. His versatile flute playing and band-leading sensibility have led to collaborations on international touring projects and film soundtracks. But he’s dedicated to mentorship and supporting emerging voices in jazz.

About Gareth Lockrane
First noticed for his dazzling flute playing, Gareth Lockrane has built an impressive reputation as a composer, arranger and bandleader. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he became a member of the UK’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra. His versatile career spans leading his own groups, international touring projects and film soundtracks. All done whilst teaching at London’s leading conservatoires. His work draws from jazz, blues, funk and gospel—balancing intricate arrangements with spontaneous improvisation. His recent album Box of Tricks showcases this across eight original compositions performed by an all-star ensemble.
