Brassy. Impassioned. An ode to community spirit.
Split The Air from Ivor Novello-winning Martin Green is a celebration of brass bands, community, and the strength of collective action. Now, Martin and the renowned Grimethorpe Colliery Band will be performing live in a one-off performance at The Glasshouse.
Martin Green, best known for his work in folk pioneers Lau, has dedicated two years to exploring the world of brass bands for his acclaimed BBC Radio 4 series, Love, Spit and Valve Oil. This show, heard by millions and nominated for numerous awards, vividly showcased the virtuosity and passion within the brass band community.
Now the album that was born from this programme comes to life in a unique live experience that marks four decades since the beginning of the historic miners’ strike. Through in-depth interviews, Martin gathered stories that shed light on the strike, the vitality of music, and the fundamental importance of shared experiences.
The music and stories that have come out of Martin’s exploration of brass will be brought vividly to life in a wall of sound by Grimethorpe Colliery Band, consistently ranked among the world’s top brass bands.
