Schubert's String Quintet

Who’s on stage
Some music lifts you up. Some digs deep. This concert by the musicians of Royal Northern Sinfonia does both with two pieces that are gentle on the surface but powerful underneath.
What they’re playing
Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ, arranged for string quartet, moves with grace and gravity. A series of slow, searching movements inspired by the final phrases spoken by Jesus Christ on the cross, it’s music for reflection and exploring deep feelings, whether you have a religion or not.
Schubert’s String Quintet in C major was written just weeks before he died. With an extra cello the sound is deeper, darker, and more soulful while the music itself is both intimate and infinite – filled with tenderness, longing, and the kind of beauty that doesn’t need to raise its voice.
