What's happening in the music?
Dvořák’s Czech Suite starts off the evening with an uplifting suite inspired by the folk dances of his homeland. It’s grounded, melodic, and full of life. Mozart shifts things into sharper focus. His Violin Concerto No. 3 dances between elegance and playfulness, with the solo line weaving in and out like quick conversation – sometimes sweet, sometimes sly, always full of character.
Schubert struggled with depression for most of his life and in his later years suffered from other health problems too. His music often reflected his physical and psychological pain, but the Fifth Symphony shows us Schubert with a smile on his face. It’s fresh, light and delicate, full of optimism.
Small is beautiful
We all know that distilling things, intensifying them and taking them down to the essentials produces amazing results, whether it’s the zing of an essential oil or the warm hug of a single malt whisky. Now imagine doing that with music. Here’s Schubert’s Symphony No. 5, a piece that’s already wonderful, distilled down for performance by just 24 players allowing you to experience its understated tenderness in an entirely new, more intimate, way.
