Back by popular demand, this concert is another ‘Orchestra Takeover’ where the musicians of Royal Northern Sinfonia themselves have chosen all the music for a diverse and entertaining programme, this time with a distinctly French flavour. There are many opportunities for individual musicians to step into the limelight, whether shining with the baroque brilliance of Boismortier and Marais, or getting into the groove of more recent compositions by Karim Al-Zand and Salim Dada, both born in former French colonies in North Africa. Mixed in among the orchestral pieces are some chamber-scale gems, rubbing shoulders with Romantic favourites by Saint-Saëns and Gounod, and it all comes to a sparkling close with the musical fireworks of Poulenc’s effervescent, and quintessentially French, Sinfonietta.
