Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue

Part of Classical 2023/24

THIS EVENT HAS PASSED

Jazzy. Bold. Bring dancing shoes.

Who’s on stage

Our friends from across the Pennines, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, plus their brand new Chief Conductor Domingo Hindoyan (more on him later), and pianist Paul Lewis who shot to fame aged just 22 at the 1994 World Piano Competition.

What they’re playing

Music that’s strong on vibrant rhythm and catchy tunes: Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from the musical West Side Story, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (a musical description of New York City), Aaron Copland’s jazzy concerto, and finally the powerful Symphonic Dances by Sergei Rachmaninov. It’s one big romp.

What’s happening in the music

It’d be easier to ask what isn’t happening. This concert is packed full of melody, drama, and ear-grabbing rhythms. Bernstein’s Dances are like a whistle stop tour of the musical, all the best bits heaped into just 20 minutes. Gershwin and Copland bring the jazz, Rachmaninov brings the epic big-orchestra ending.

Unique for
We can’t think of any other pieces of music that ask the orchestra to both click their fingers and shout ‘mambo’ in unison. Don’t know what we mean? You’ll find out in Bernstein’s piece.

Where you’ve heard it before
The Great Gatsby, United Airlines ads, even Gremlins and Skins all used George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

DomingoHindoyan

Get to know the conductor

Pep Guardiola. José Mourinho. Alex Ferguson. A good coach can work wonders. Same goes for conductors. Royal Liverpool Philharmonic signed Domingo Hidoyan in 2021 and loved him so much they extended his contract this year. Here’s a chance for North East audiences to see what the buzz is about.

You’ll know it when you hear it

Here’s a nice find. Composer Leonard Bernstein, whose music opens this concert, plays the solo piano part of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in this video from the 70’s.
