About the musicians
Debasmita Bhattacharya is a rising star sarod player gaining acclaim for her remarkable talent. Hailing from a musically rich family in Kolkata, she represents the Senia Shahjahanpur Gharana tradition, learning first from her father and guru Sarode maestro Pandit Debasish Bhattacharya.
Later she entered into the tutelage and guidance of the late Sarode virtuoso, legendary Padma Bhushan Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta of the Senia Shahjahanpur Gharana.
She last performed in the North East back in 2017 and we are delighted to bring her back again for another Riverside Ragas performance.
Born in the UK, Gurdain Rayatt is one of the leading tabla players in the country today performing regularly as an international artiste. Born in the UK and raised in London, he began his training at a very young age by his grandfather Bhai Gurmit Singh Virdee, and his father Ustad Harkirat Singh Rayatt, going on to be trained by the tabla legend Guru Acharya Pandit Shankar Ghosh. Hailing from the traditions of three major tabla gharanas (Benares, Punjab and Farukhabad), Gurdain has been blessed with the opportunity to learn from some of the greatest tabla players on the stage today including Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Kumar Bose and Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. He has been fortunate to have toured, performed and collaborated with some of the most proficient performers currently onstage including Anoushka Shankar, Niladri Kumar, Kala Ramnath & Purbayan Chatterjee.
