Life-affirming. Intense. A legend of the keys.

Who’s on stage

We welcome none other than the iconic pianist Mitsuko Uchida for this very special concert, with her breath-taking live performances being known for both for her technical brilliance and emotional honesty. Deliberately only performing a limited number of concerts per year, her appearance with us is not to be missed.

What they’re playing

If you asked a piano boffin what Mitsuko Uchida is famous for, Mozart and Schubert would be high on their list – and she brings favourites from each of these composers to us in Gateshead, plus music by Haydn and something a little spicy by Schoenberg.

What's happening in the music?

Schubert’s deeply personal Sonata is the apex of this concert – a raw expression of his struggles with illness and acceptance of mortality, a theme which could be dark, but which in Schubert’s hands is a life-affirming and positive message. The first half of the evening includes Mozart’s elegant, yearning Rondo and six bracing miniature pieces by Schoenberg, together with Haydn’s sombre yet beautiful F minor variations.

Taking Risks

For Mitsuko Uchida live performance is about being bold and taking chances, saying  “You have to risk your life on stage. That’s why live performances are more interesting”.
