Newcastle International Chamber Music Series - Valo Quartet
Elegant. Colourful. Perfectly crafted.
Who’s on stage
A new quartet led by a familiar face – Royal Northern Sinfonia’s leader Maria Włoszczowska. Formed in 2023, the name Valo Quartet comes from the Finnish word for ‘light’.
What they’re playing
They begin with music written in 1917 by Maria’s Polish compatriot Karol Szymanowski, best known for his orchestral music including two popular violin concertos. Schubert’s A minor quartet is the first of his wonderful handful of ‘mature’ quartets and features a familiar theme from his incidental music to the play ‘Rosamunde’. Ravel’s sole quartet is exquisitely colourful and perfectly crafted, inspired by the ground-breaking work of his older colleague Debussy.
