Newcastle International Chamber Music Series - Cuarteto Quiroga
Exhilarating. Spiritual. Spanish flair.
Who’s on stage
Spanish string quartet Cuarteto Quiroga make their Gateshead debut. They won the 2018 National Music Award of Spain and were the first artists in residence at the Royal Palace of Madrid, so we’re in good company.
What they’re playing
Haydn’s C major quartet is an entertaining and sunny work with a high-spirited finale that is guaranteed to raise a smile. Conversely, Beethoven’s A minor quartet contains a profound ‘hymn of thanksgiving’ as its rarified slow movement, transporting the listener into the internal world of the profoundly deaf composer. Argentinian Alberto Ginastera wrote his first quartet in 1948, a contrasting work with instructions including ‘Allegro violento’ and ‘Calmo e poetico’.
