Mozart’s Symphony No. 39

Who’s on stage
Royal Northern Sinfonia, Music Director Dinis Sousa and soprano Louise Alder.
What they’re playing
Mozart could do dark and moody but he’s maybe better known for his upbeat, perky, optimistic music, and that’s definitely what we’ve got here. His Symphony No. 39 does have an element of mystery, but overall it’s a piece full of musical fireworks, with the final movement being nothing short of a triumphant romp, Mozart totally letting his hair down. Kurtág’s spare, enigmatic music is the perfect counterpoint, a palate cleanser between the rich offerings from Mozart.
This performance includes a free pre-concert talk at 6.30pm in the auditorium.
