Julian Lage
plus Ike Thomas
Visceral. Substantial. Narratives that go beyond words.
Hailed as one of the most astonishing guitarists of his generation and “highest category of improvising musicians” (New Yorker), Julian Lage has spent over a decade searching through the many strains of American musical history with flawless technique and a spirit of infinite possibility. The California-born New York-based musician has an impressive resume in his own right and through collaborating with Gary Burton and John Zorn, as well as duo projects with Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge and Fred Hersch, among others.
Lage comes to The Glasshouse this November and will leave audiences awestruck with renditions of tracks from his latest album Speak To Me.

What our team say
“Expect the unexpected with Julian Lage who is a brilliant mix of the deliberate and wild. There is something about how ‘spare’ his music is and I love the fact he plays a Telecaster which might be surprising for jazz. He plays it for its bluntness and truth – I think this is plain to see in his performance which could only be improved if Margaret Glaspy were to join him on-stage! ”

What they say
‘We all got into the music beyond the notes, you know, ‘what’s the signature of this tune, what’s it saying?’ That’s one of the things I love about the record.’

About the album
Julian Lage’s vivid, wondrously textured new album Speak To Me offers a series of dispatches from his ongoing search for narrative beyond words. Intimate in tone and capacious in intention, the album represents some of the most ambitious music Lage has documented to date. Its originals travel a wide range of American music, and delight in the deliberate crossing of wires between gospel hymn and rural blues, California singer-songwriter sunshine and skronky jazz.
