Holst, Brahms and Spohr

Holst, Brahms and Spohr

Part of Royal Northern Sinfonia: Out and about

Queen's Hall Hexham

Who’s on stage

Musicians from Royal Northern Sinfonia hit the road for a visit to Queen’s Hall as part of Hexham and District Music Society’s 2026/27 season.

What they’re playing

Sometimes great things come in small packages.

Louis Spohr’s Nonet was a big hit at its first performance. No one had used a group of nine musicians in that way before, and it sparked a trend for other composers to write their own nonets. It’s full of lush textures and lyrical tunes, all with a playful twist.

Brahms’ String Sextet No. 1 takes you through all the emotions. Elegant, soulful, plus full-fat sound. Star Trek: The Next Generation fans might know it as music beautiful enough to make a Vulcan cry.

And Holst’s Wind Quintet is like a spring walk through the countryside, sparkling with all the unique textures of wind instruments.
