Eclipse on The Tyne
On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse will cross parts of the world – it’s set to be the last solar eclipse with over 90% coverage visible from the UK until 2090. Join us for a rare chance to experience this once-in-a-lifetime moment.
From 6pm, The Glasshouse will become eclipse HQ.
Show your ticket to pick up your free eclipse glasses, get hands-on with family-friendly activities, explore astronomy with the team from Kielder Observatory and watch live coverage from Spain’s path of totality on our giant Concourse screen.
As the eclipse unfolds above the Quayside, those with tickets can head outside to watch more than 90% of the Sun disappear behind the Moon, guided by live commentary from Kielder Observatory astronomers.
A rare celestial event. Shared with thousands of other skywatchers on the banks of the Tyne.
This event is free to attend, but tickets must be booked in advance, as each ticket includes a complimentary pair of eclipse glasses, so you can safely watch thanks to Go North East.

If you’re planning to view the eclipse directly, you’ll need to bring your own certified eclipse glasses.

6:10pm | Eclipse begins
The Moon starts its slow journey across the face of the Sun.
7:07pm | Maximum eclipse
More than 90% of the Sun is covered by the Moon.
7:26pm | Totality in Spain
Watch live coverage of the path of totality on our giant Concourse screen.
8pm | That’s a wrap
The eclipse comes to an end and the evening draws to a close.
Clouds won’t stop the celebration.
If conditions aren’t ideal for viewing, activities will move inside The Glasshouse and our giant Concourse screen will show live coverage from Spain’s path of totality, alongside additional activities and astronomy content from Kielder Observatory.
Eee-clipse! The Talk | 5pm
Fancy knowing your eclipses from your ellipses?
Kick off the evening with Eee-clipse! The Talk, a lively exploration of the Sun, the Moon and dark skies, led by Kielder Observatory.
The session concludes with a panel discussion featuring Kielder Observatory astronomers and is the perfect warm-up for the main event.
