Moving our creative learning work online

Ben YMP

Could you help support online access to our Young Musicians Programme and develop this work for the long term?

Social distancing guidelines mean we have had to temporarily close Sage Gateshead. But we are working hard to move our creative learning activity online where possible, keeping participants of all ages connected.

One brilliant example is our Young Musicians Programme, which is open to children and young people aged 4 to 19 who are interested in music and want to learn. We provide one-to-one instrumental tuition, group music-making, musicianship classes, the chance to perform at Sage Gateshead and across the UK, together with opportunities to work with world-class musicians and composers.

The Young Musicians Programme is unique due to the wide range of music on offer – spanning classical, folk, jazz and choral music – drawing students with a wide range of interests from across the North. Each year we offer over £200,000 in bursaries which cover tuition, musical instruments and travel, ensuring we are financially accessible for all.

We are proud to say we have worked hard to move our Young Musicians Programme online, supporting hundreds of young people to stay connected to their music-making. This involved new software, training, and paying our specialist Music Leaders to deliver these sessions.

Our Young Musicians Programme always requires the support of donors, but right now the need is even greater. So that we can continue with our online delivery, and to keep developing the programme and widening access more generally, we will need additional support.
