The Glasshouse and IS-IS New Partnership Announcement
Our Business Champions are vital to supporting our work as a charity. Recently, IS-IS Facility Services have renewed their partnership with us and to celebrate, we want to revisit some memories together, and answer one of the most common questions we get about our building – how on earth do you clean the windows?
Our partnership with IS-IS isn’t just about them supporting our work in bringing music to thousands of people each year – they’re also the business that has taken care of our standout feature for over 20 years.
It’s no secret that The Glasshouse is made up of a lot of windows – it’s in the name. And each of the 630 panes of 5cm thick glass panels is completely different from the next, all with their own unique shape, size and angle. But keeping them clean is no simple task – the challenging shape of our building needs specialist teams to safely access our roof and abseil down the side.

That’s where IS-IS Facility Services come in. IS-IS Facility Services are experts in rope-access cleaning, and over the two decades we’ve been open they’ve got to know every curve and corner of the building, keeping us sparkling across the Tyne. Their technicians spend up to a week climbing up and abseiling down our 40-metre-tall building with their cleaning supplies, creating a huge amount of joy for those of us lucky enough to see it from inside the building.
And it’s not only cleaning – their huge knowledge of ropes, abseiling and how to safely manoeuvrer around The Glasshouse have seen us work with IS-IS for some pretty memorable projects. From carrying the Olympic Torch across our roof to placing huge vinyl stickers on the windows for the Great Exhibition of the North or even installing a zip-line from Level 3 right down to the concourse, it’s IS-IS who have supported us (literally!) in making these events happen. And this summer, during some major renovations in our concert hall, they’ll be helping us install new acoustic curtains in Sage One.
