Episode #7: The North

The theme for this latest episode is the North.

It’s unlikely to have escaped your attention that we’re about to witness a Great Exhibition of the North that’s a once-in-a generation opportunity to celebrate all kinds of northern-ness, and explore what the North actually means in 2018.

To help us understand a little more about the special and specific sounds of the North we talk to radio DJ Lauren Laverne about the week of gigs by northern artists she is curating for the Exhibition and artist Mark Fell, who is creating a sound installation at Sage Gateshead made up of northern sounds.

We pop-in with poet Degna Stone and folk musicians Bella Hardy and Sarah Hayes as they prepare their performance of new music and spoken word, called Backbone of Our Land. And we find out from Vinyl-o-phile, comedian and general know-it-all Steve Drayton what he considers to be the great albums of the North.

Backstage is a regular podcast where we go behind the scenes for exclusive interviews and insights from leading and emerging artists who’ll be taking to the stage at Sage Gateshead, and discover some of the activities that take place, and the communities that meet there.
