We caught up with Rodrigo y Gabriela ahead of their Sage One appearance in 2019 to find out more about this hugely in-demand live act, recognised by their fans and critics alike as being one of the top live touring acts in the world.

What was the first record you bought?

Rodrigo – I can’t remember. Possibly a Beatles compilation album cassette in Mexico City.

Where in the world would you like to play that you have not already?

China, we are hoping to go there soon.

Who was the first band or artist you ever saw perform live?

Pink Floyd in Mexico City, 1994.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Watching Lionel Messi play for Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Who are your favourite writers?

I don’t read much fiction. I like history and philosophy. I enjoyed reading Yuval Noah Harari’s books.

If you could collaborate with any other artists, living or dead, who would you choose?

We’ve been very lucky to meet and work with so many fellow musicians whose incredible skills we have long admired. I’d rather not say who else in case I jinx it. In terms of those who have passed on? Jimi Hendrix, that would be incredible!

What are you listening to at the moment?

New music from Tool. NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts. Metallica, always Metallica.

What was the first song you learned to play?

Probably some simple Mexican folk song, I can’t really remember.

Where’s your favourite place to go on holiday?

India. Barcelona, when they are playing at home.

Best advice you can give to emerging talent?

Practice, practice, practice. Believe in yourself.
