Back by popular demand for 2024, The Glasshouse is joined once more by Romanian-British pianist Alexandra Dariescu and ballerina Imogen-Lily Ash for two performances of The Nutcracker and I. Reimagining Tchaikovsky’s ballet for the 21st century, this breathtaking production uses astonishing, state of the art animation and effects to retell this seasonal classic like it’s never been told before.

Dariescu first created and produced The Nutcracker and I to try and reach younger audiences and those less familiar with classical music. Since first premiering at Barbican’s Milton Court in 2017, it has mesmerised audiences across Europe, Australia, China, the US and the Emirates and reached more than 70,000 people worldwide. In 2019, The Nutcracker and I was shortlisted for one of the most prestigious German Awards, Opus Klassik, as one of the 9 nominees including projects by Daniel Barenboim, Lang Lang and Anne-Sophie Mutter.

On stage, Dariescu is at the piano joined by the ballerina behind a see-through gauze screen, whilst exquisite, hand drawn digital animations are projected onto the gauze, bringing the magical story to life. The music contains 15 virtuosic movements of the original Tchaikovsky score including all the fan favourites – Trepak, Flower Waltz, and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy – specially arranged for solo piano.

Join The Glasshouse on 29th December for this special winter treat to continue the festive magic. Tickets are on sale now at https://theglasshouseicm.org/whats-on/the-nutcracker-and-i-2024/

About The Glasshouse International Centre for Music

The Glasshouse International Centre for Music is a home for live music lovers.

It’s a place where you can hear rock legends or pop icons on the same night as folk trios or string quartets. Where new musicians are nurtured and showcased on the same stages as platinum-selling performers. And where youth choirs and tambourine-shaking toddlers practise in the same spaces as its acclaimed orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia.

Because as an international centre for music they’re focused on creating and celebrating outstanding music – whether that’s unearthing or growing talent from the region or bringing the world’s best artists to their stages. And as a charity they’re focused on making sure all of that is available to anyone – no matter where you’re from, how old you are, how much money you have, or what challenges you face.

Which is why every year more than 2 million people are able to join for top-notch gigs, concerts, and classes – in their venue at Gateshead Quays, out in communities across the North East, and through livestreamed performances and digital lessons.

Whether you’re making it up or taking it in, you’ll find music lives and grows there.
