Corinne Bailey Rae promises to light up The Glasshouse on Wednesday 24 July 2024 when she presents her critically-acclaimed 2023 album Black Rainbows.

Bailey Rae’s 2006 self-titled number-one UK debut album featured the global hits Put Your Records On and Like A Star, making the Leeds native an international star. She followed that success with two more critically acclaimed studio albums and accepted not one but two Grammy Awards, two MOBOs and countless more award nominations. However, it was time to take a left turn.

Her latest release, Black Rainbows, is an astral leap away from Corinne’s past work, musically and thematically. Her life changed forever when she stepped inside Theaster Gates’ project at the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago. Black Rainbows’ songs drew inspiration from a curated collection of Black archives with books, sculptures, records, furniture and more.

Corinne said:

“Engaging with these archives and encountering Theaster Gates and his practice has changed how I think about myself as an artist and what the possibilities of my work can be. This music has come through seeing. Seeing has been like hearing, for me. While I was looking, songs/sounds appeared.”

This show is one of only two UK non-festival shows from Corinne this summer, and the only one outside London. Catch her new blend of futuristic RnB sounds and rousing garage rock on Wednesday 24 July, following eagerly anticipated shows at Glastonbury, ahead of festival sets at Latitude and We Out Here.

With most seats taken out on Level One for this show, audiences can dance to their heart’s content. Gig-goers can also make a real night of it by dining in the Brasserie before the show.

From last summer’s stunning Glastonbury warm-up for Kelis and sold-out shows for Jack Savoretti, The Glasshouse is counting down the days to welcome Corinne Bailey Rae, who’ll warm up nicely in the North East for the rest of the summer festival season.

About The Glasshouse International Centre for Music

The Glasshouse International Centre for Music is a home for live music lovers.

It’s a place where you can hear rock legends or pop icons on the same night as folk trios or string quartets. Where new musicians are nurtured and showcased on the same stages as platinum-selling performers. And where youth choirs and tambourine-shaking toddlers practise in the same spaces as its acclaimed orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia.

Because as an international centre for music they’re focused on creating and celebrating outstanding music – whether that’s unearthing or growing talent from the region or bringing the world’s best artists to their stages. And as a charity they’re focused on making sure all of that is available to anyone – no matter where you’re from, how old you are, how much money you have, or what challenges you face.

Which is why every year more than 2 million people are able to join for top-notch gigs, concerts, and classes – in their venue at Gateshead Quays, out in communities across the North East, and through livestreamed performances and digital lessons.

Whether you’re making it up or taking it in, you’ll find music lives and grows there.
