What’s happening in the music?

Bespoke concerts for school groups open up the world of classical music to children and inspire their creativity. Explore the BBC Ten Pieces, performed live by our orchestra Royal Northern Sinfonia, with plenty of opportunities for our interaction led by our expert and friendly presenters, YolanDa and Ellie.

Step inside our great Glasshouse time machine and travel through the ages right up to the present day, discovering music that broke boundaries, inspires hope, and makes you want to dance. You’ll hear pieces from the vast BBC Ten Pieces library, including music from the latest collection (released October 2024) written exclusively by women, enabling us to get creative with fantastic classical music while also improving representation of women composers on the stage and in the classroom.

The programme includes Shigihara’s Grasswalk from the game Plants vs Zombies and Margaret Bonds’ Montgomery Variations, which was written in response to the American Civil Rights Movement and tells the story of what it means to stand up for your beliefs. Marianne von Martinez achieved success completely unexpected of women in 18th Century Vienna. Discover Martinez’s charismatic Overture alongside perhaps the most well-known piece in the trumpet repertoire by her friend and mentor, Joseph Haydn.

We hope you’ll feel full of life and hope with Boulanger’s ‘On a Spring Morning’ and are ready to dance your way through Copland’s energetic and dramatic Hoedown – we think it’s impossible to keep still! You’ll also hear music by Errollyn Wallen, one of the most-performed living composers and the first black woman to have her music performed at the BBC Proms, and the equally groundbreaking Igor Stravinsky.
