The Listening Service is Radio 3’s innovative programme aimed at bringing fresh audiences to classical music. Each week, Tom Service introduces a different way of listening to and imagining a musical idea. How do composers begin a piece of music? Why is repetition so important in all kinds of music, from pop to classical? When does noise become music? In short – how does music actually work?

Today at Sage Gateshead Tom explores the way music can induce, express and exorcise anger! His guest is the “Queen of Shred” Berit Hagen, aka The Commander-in-Chief – heavy metal guitarist and soprano.

Presenter of Radio 3’s Music Matters and The Listening Service, Tom Service studied music at the University of York. He writes for newspapers and magazines including The Guardian and his TV documentaries include a 6-part series of 20th century classics at the Proms for BBC Four. He has also written books called Music as Alchemy: Journeys with Great Conductors and their Orchestras and Full of Noises: Interviews with the composer Thomas Adès.
