Eight members from Royal Northern Sinfonia’s string section take centre stage for this evening’s performance.
What they’re playing
Mendelssohn’s amazing String Octet, written when he was only sixteen boldly claims its place alongside the greatest chamber works of Schubert and Beethoven. The music leaps onto the stage with a thrilling confidence and bravura. Shostakovich’s Two Pieces was written also when he was a teenager, the whistful piece was dedicated to the memory of a young friend of the composer who had passed away unexpectedly. As well as works by Bach and Haydn.
