Poulent’s Sonata for Trumpet, Horn, and Trombone bursts to life with a cheerful trumpet tune and unfolds as a series of buoyant dances for brass, filled with shifting rhythmic patterns, the trumpet and horn lie at the heart of this rousing piece. Holst’s fanfare-filled and recently discovered Leiston Suite is also on the bill, alongside D’Indy’s folky Chansons et Danses. The afternoon comes to a close with Stravinsky’s playful and drama-filled Octet.
