Mahler Symphony No.3
Gustav Mahler said that ‘a symphony must be like the world’. But even by his own standards, Mahler’s Third Symphony is extraordinary. Probably the longest symphony that’s regularly performed, it’s a concert in its own right: a huge, teeming musical world in which the composer tried to capture the whole of nature in music. Distant trumpets, children’s songs, glittering marches and serene mountain-top meditations: Mahler throws them all into the mix before ending with a rapturous hymn to love. With Pietari Inkinen at the helm of the Prague Symphony Orchestra – an orchestra steeped in Mahlerian tradition – this will be a Sage Gateshead first and should be a major occasion.
