Make Music Seminar: Latin American Music vs. Music of Latin America

Join Dr Jason Holcomb for this interactive introduction and discussion of Music from Central and South America and The Caribbean
This will be an exploration into the music of Central/South American and The Caribbean. We will discuss and examine what these incredible music traditions are, briefly look at where they originated, what the fundamental properties of these traditions consist of, and how they have influenced the modern music eco-system.
We will talk about points of origin, cultural forces at play within these traditions, instrumentation, rhythmic concepts, why these musical forms are critically important to modern society. We’ll also consider some important figures and pieces within some of the more well-known traditions.
A live trio will be performing examples of some of the traditions discussed and some of the performance techniques typically found therein.
We will be looking specifically at the music of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Columbia. Including traditions of Salsa, Son Cubano, Merengue, Rhumba, Cumbia, Bachata, Mariachi, Tango, Bossa Nova, Samba, and others.
Featuring Dr. Jason Holcomb and accompanied by Alix Shepherd and Carlos Luis Rivera.
