Craig Ogden Plays Rodrigo
Who’s on stage
Royal Northern Sinfonia are joined by guest conductor Kristian Sallinen and virtuoso guitarist Craig Ogden.
What they’re playing
Music has a rare power to transport us, even if only momentarily, to another place. Rodrigo’s Guitar Concerto, the Concierto de Aranjuez, is a prime example of that. Even if just for 20 minutes, you’ll be taken from an autumnal Carlisle and instead feel the heat of the Mediterranean sun, enjoying the sights and sounds of yesteryear Spain.
Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 is, on the surface, full of the composer’s trademark elegance, but underneath the veneer it’s a darker piece. There’s anger, force and passion there; with a dramatic bleakness in the second movement lightened by the scampering rhythm of the hyperactive ending.
Pre-concert talk: Free, one hour before the concert.
