Exquisite. Mesmerising. Masters at work.

Who’s on stage

Two of the great viola players of our time – Hélène Clement and Timothy Ridout – come together for an evening recital in Sage Two, showcasing some of their favourite works for viola.

Unfortunately Nobuko Imai is longer able to perform tonight due to ill health. The festival’s artistic directors are grateful to Hélène Clement for stepping in at short notice.

What they’re playing

A diverse mix of music for two violas, from 18th century viola virtuoso Alessandro Rolla to Isang Yun’s 1988  composition “Contemplation”.

Take a listen

Frank Bridge was a viola player as well as a composer and, as you might expect, created a wealth of gorgeous viola music that really shows off the instrument’s best qualities. This Lament for viola duo was premiered by Frank Bridge and Lionel Tertis himself in 1912.
