How do you get a foothold in the music business?

YMP207

Joe’s been playing the guitar and singing for many years. He always knew he wanted to follow a career in the music business, either performing or producing music. Like many other budding musicians, Joe spent time busking and gigging in pubs to get a bit of experience. But he longed to get a foot in the door and jump-start a music career.

Joe was studying for his A Levels when his teacher, who knew about his passion for music, suggested he take a look at a new music production course taking place at The Glasshouse. Cue Making Tracks.

“I was looking for different areas to explore in the music industry as a potential career, to make useful connections and gain knowledge in a new area. I hoped it would also help with songwriting by using the knowledge and tools gained through the course.”

Making Tracks is a songwriting and music production course for 15–25-year-olds delivered by professional music producers in professional studios in the North East. Whether you’re looking to take your first steps, develop your existing knowledge, or work towards becoming a professional producer, there’s a course to help you.

“I started the introductory course in my final year of A levels in preparation for my gap year, which I am using to solely focus on music. I then progressed on to the intermediate and advanced courses to develop a further understanding in more day-to-day experiences of studios, working with different artists, which also helped me to discover that the process is different for every artist.”

Joe credits the courses with helping kick-start his career in music, as well as gaining essential hands-on studio experience.

“I’ve just finished the advanced course at Blank Studios which was great. I’ve developed a really strong knowledge of production and working in a real-life studio environment, and I’ve also met loads of like-minded friends.

“I’ve had an amazing experience on the course over the last 30 weeks. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to progress into a music career.”

If you, or someone you know, is interested following in Joe’s footsteps, apply now for the Making Tracks courses starting in January. Deadline for applications is Sunday 17 December at 5pm.

Making Tracks is delivered by The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in partnership with Access Music Production CIC.
