String Programme

CAT 2025 - Strings main

Learn from an expert team of tutors—including members of Royal Northern Sinfonia—and take your playing to the next level.

Alongside one-to-one lessons and music language tuition, you’ll rehearse weekly in small ensembles, often collaborating with first-study piano students. Many students take Associated Board music exams up to diploma level, and there are opportunities to join larger ensembles for special projects—like our recording and performance with The Lake Poets in a sold-out Sage Two gig.

More advanced players can audition for Young Sinfonia while those with a passion for folk might be interested in Folkestra. Many string players also take up piano as a second study—we strongly recommend it.

Many string players also take a second study instrument (usually piano) and we strongly recommend this.

Our students regularly take part in masterclasses with world-class musicians, including Simon Wallfisch, Ruth Killius, Robert Cohen, and soloists from the ECHO Rising Stars programme. Workshops cover everything from improvisation and recording techniques to playing electronic strings and exploring folk and rock styles.
