CAT 2025 - Songwriting

Whether you’re a songwriter, composer, or both, you’ll work with experienced tutors to develop a diverse portfolio. You’ll explore writing for different ensembles and instrument lineups, using technology to shape your ideas. Regular workshops and showcase opportunities will help refine your craft, and we’ll support you in building a toolkit tailored to your ambitions—whether that’s writing and performing your own songs, composing for an orchestra, or anything in between.

At CAT, we take a flexible approach to learning. Alongside one-to-one lessons, all students take core and option sessions designed to support their individual development. You’ll explore music in context—understanding different styles from social and cultural perspectives, breaking down their key elements, and experimenting with ideas in a hands-on way.

We also offer the chance to gain formal qualifications, with pathways covering different styles and previous learning. If you haven’t yet taken a theory qualification, we’ll support you in achieving Grade 5 through ABRSM, LCM Popular Music, or Rockschool. Those who’ve already reached this level can dive into more advanced concepts, applying theory to their instrument practice and collaborative projects.

At CAT, playing and understanding music go hand in hand—giving you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to take your music further.

All students will be given the opportunity to choose a music language option in an area of interest. These options evolve from year to year, but are currently:
– Music Production and Sequencing
– The Craft of Pop
– Jazz Combo
– Music and Meaning (philosophy)
– Film & TV
– Advanced ABRSM Grades (6-8)
– Composer Approaches
We also offer GCSE and A-Level support in the form of a weekly listening and appraising session for those students studying for academic music qualifications.
