Connecting. Comforting. A son of American folklorists.
Jake Xerxes Fussell is a singer, guitarist, and composer based in Durham, NC. He has a knack for creatively drawing from traditional music and archival field recordings – incorporating elements of songs from the past into new work.
Fussell’s critically acclaimed album When I’m Called (Fat Possum Records), released in the summer of 2024 was produced by James Elkingion. It features Blake Mills (guitars), Ben Whiteley (bass), and Joe Westerlund (drums), along with additional vocals from Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb.
His latest track ‘Close My Eyes’ (a song by the late American composer/cellist/singer Arthur Russell) was released in March of 2025 as a digital single.
Fussell and Elkington also wrote and recorded the music for Rebuilding, a new feature film directed by Max Walker-Silverman that premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

Plus Natalie Wildgoose

Recalling the spectral crackles of Molly Drake, or the heart-wrenching intimacies of Josephine Foster and Joan Baez, Natalie Wildgoose’s ghostly take on folk tradition carries the powerful, rarefied qualities of an unearthed archive recording. Writing and recording on pianos across the Yorkshire Dales using her grandfather’s old reel-to-reel tape recorder, Natalie seeks to uncover the past; to reconnect with and capture the environments of the places and people that hold her.
Her sophomore EP ‘Come Into The Garden’ has been praised the likes of Clash, The Line of Best Fit, Far Out, Shindig!, Hard of Hearing, The Most Radicalist, KLOF, Songlines and BBC Radio 6 Music Mixtape Introducing to name a few.
