The first ever Youth Brass in Concert Championship will take place at Sage Gateshead this autumn, and the adjudicators have now been revealed.
The competition will form part of the annual Brass in Concert weekend from November 17 to 18, which includes the 42nd Brass in Concert Championship and World of Brass in Concert, featuring Fodens and Matt Ford.
Adjudicators for the Youth Brass in Concert Championship on November 17 are Richard Evans (for Quality of Performance) and Helen Harrelson (for Entertainment and Presentation).
Richard has conducted nine winning performances at Brass in Concert. Helen has been a member of some of the world’s finest brass bands, including Black Dyke, Fodens, YBS and Fountain City, with whom she will perform at the festival in November. She recently received an award for outstanding contribution to music education from the Kansas Bandmasters Association.
Brass in Concert Chairman, John Woods, said: “We are delighted to be able to reveal such high-quality judges for this new event. Both are, of course, vastly experienced professional musicians.
“The adjudication format will follow the same principles as the main Championship with 60 per cent of the weighting applied to the quality of playing.”
The six leading youth bands will perform a 20-minute own-choice entertainment set and the format will largely mirror the senior event on Sunday, competing for a first prize of £1,000.
The Youth Championships will be followed by the gala concert featuring Fodens and Matt Ford in a Sinatra-themed presentation.
The competing bands are:
- Elland Silver Youth
- Houghton Area Youth
- Rochdale Borough Youth
- Scottish Borders Youth
- Wardle Academy Youth
- Youth Brass 2000
Brass in Concert is held in association with Yamaha, Banks Group and British Bandsman.
